Having attracted the rich and famous over the last two centuries, it’s no surprise there are plenty of historical plaques in this area, which show a glimmer of Hampstead’s glamorous inhabitants.

Hampstead has long been a haven for artists. Located in zone 2, the area has attracted painters, poets, and performers over the centuries.

Notable residents have included  John Keats, who wrote “Ode to a Nightingale” while living in Hampstead. George Romney, who is best known for his portraits of 18th century society figures, found Hampstead the perfect place to paint. As did the landscape artist John Constable who did some of his most famous paintings of the Heath while living in Hampstead. It inspired Bram Stoker when writing Dracula.

Today, Hampstead remains a popular destination for artists and filmmakers seeking inspiration. The area’s many parks and green spaces provide a welcome respite from the hustle and bustle of London, while its quaint shops and cafes offer a glimpse into traditional English life. Whether you’re looking for history or creativity, Hampstead is sure to delight.

On this London guided walk discover how Hampstead Village has a rich history of intellectual and artistic associations and, of course, the beautiful Hampstead Heath which has been known to be a source of inspiration for artists, with its wild grasses and sweeping views.

Hampstead remains an inspiring place for artists creating a creative atmosphere and a beautiful setting with its winding streets and quaint cottages. If you’re looking for a creative escape, be sure to pay a visit to Hampstead.

Hampstead Village Highlights Walk Reviews

Absolutely wonderful walk. Hamstead Village is unique. Rhona, our guide was very knowledgeable and gave us many tips on exploring the area further.
I never realised that Hampstead was originally a spa town where people came in the 18th century to drink the iron rich “chalybeate” waters. One of the many interesting facts presented in this informative walk which took place in – rather unusually for 2023 – glorious sunshine.

I would recommend this walk. It was very enjoyable. As opposed to other tours, this goes through Hampstead village. This means there is little traffic, if any, compared to the other tours I have done in London. If you have a sunny day, as we did, that is an extra bonus. Rhona will tell you very interesting stories about former residents of the neighbourhood that lived in the area hundreds of years ago, or more recently. It all goes quite quickly and leaves you thinking you have to go back at some point on your own and walk again the streets, now knowing what you learnt.

This was such a picturesque, fascinating and enjoyable tour. Rhona is a very captivating guide. Highly recommend.

Ms Levine offers a lovely tour of Hampstead Village with an emphasis on literary history (albeit lots of more personal details woven into it) along with a good dose of class-conscious social history. Highly recommended.

This was such a lovely interesting walk in a beautiful part of London. The guide was great-funny and knowledgeable. The time just flew. I loved it and learned a lot about the area.

A lovely wander around one of the pretty areas of London. Lots of interesting facts and history of both the area and some of the notable residents were delivered by our friendly, knowledgeable guide. Thank you.
A very interesting stroll around a part of London that I had little knowledge of. The guide was enthusiastic and interesting. I would recommend this walk to anyone who wants to escape from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Our guide was very informative and added humour when she can. She is happy to chat and answer questions on the short walks from one point of interest to the next and she is clearly a people person who seems to lead guided walks because she enjoys it. Her enthusiasm is contagious. I will be back for more….

A really lovely walk exploring the glories of Hampstead. Our guide was friendly and very informative. This is not a walk for the faint-hearted, as it involves steep inclines, many stairs and some uneven terrain, but it was a most enjoyable exploration with some hidden gems. Just the thing to build up an appetite for lunch on a Sunday morning. If I had a small criticism, it would be that we could have done with some more comfort stops. This required a level of endurance as well as reasonable fitness.

A fascinating walk through the highways and byways of Hampstead was greatly enriched by our guide, who made the experience a delight and relevant to all of the group, which with a span of age and nationality, is an art in itself. It was so interesting to see Admirals House like a vast galleon and to hear the story of which memorable film character it inspired ..from winding alleyways to the grandest houses with tales of carriages and high society and of painters and mistresses contrasted with mossy woodland grove and churchyard and in complete contrast a sudden opening and view across to reveal the skyline of the City.

Wonderful! Full of knowledge and learned a lot.

Although we had visited Hampstead before, our tour guide took us around some fascinating backstreets and alleyways, showing us where some of Hampstead’s famous residents had lived. The whole walk was full of interest, and the time spent seemed to fly by!

I thoroughly enjoyed the walk; so full of history, and the guide pointed out many highlights worth returning to.
