London plays a central role in Robert Louis Stevenson’s novella, “The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde”. The story is set in the 19th century and is largely based in the West End of London, particularly in the district of Soho. Stevenson uses London’s streets, buildings, and atmosphere to create a sense of foreboding and unease throughout the story.

London in 1886 was a bustling metropolis, the largest city in the world at the time. The population had surpassed 5 million, and the city was experiencing rapid growth and industrialisation. Almost every neighbourhood had factories and workshops, and the city was known for its smog and pollution.

The city’s streets were lined with gas lamps, creating a dimly lit and mysterious nighttime atmosphere. The streets were crowded with people from all walks of life, including the wealthy, the working class, and the destitute.

Despite its growth and prosperity, London in 1886 was also a city of contrasts. While the upper classes enjoyed a luxurious lifestyle and fashionable entertainment, the working class often lived in squalid conditions, with little access to healthcare or education.

The contrasting areas of the city, such as the respectable and wealthy districts versus the poverty-stricken and immoral areas, highlight the dual nature of human beings and the struggle between good and evil. The descriptions of foggy and dark London streets add to the mysterious and eerie atmosphere of the novella.

Led by a qualified London tour guide, this Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde Walk offer a unique and engaging way to explore the haunting world of one of literature’s most iconic characters. So come along and immerse yourself in the spine-chilling tale of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde.

Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde Walk Reviews

Anthony
Hazel is an excellent guide whose interest in the history of the area and in how it informs our understanding of the novella engaged everyone in our group, regardless of prior knowledge. Not only those members of the group who were studying the book for exams benefited from Hazel’s insights with regard to the social and historical context. It was also really interesting for us to explore with fresh eyes parts of London we thought we knew well. I might add that Hazel’s enthusiasm and sunny disposition made it much easier to thole the icy blasts and heavy downpours which assailed us. We’ll be looking out for the next tour!
Caroline
Fantastic Guide who really knew her stuff & had a shining enthusiasm for the subject! The rain did not daunt her & it was fascinating to this Londoner to find some secret areas I didn’t know about & had been walking past without knowing these little Victorian remnants were there!
Steve
Hazel is a lively, engaging and knowledgeable guide, who is always interesting and gears her talk towards the different members of each group. I’ve been on her walks on my own, in adult company and with children, and we’ve enjoyed every one.
Sybil
Our guide, Hazel, was very knowledgeable and entertaining so it was a thoroughly interesting and enjoyable walk. What a shame the weather wasn’t kinder! I would definitely recommend this experience.
Robert
Just about one of the best walks I have ever experienced. Hazel’s knowledge is delivered with an unassuming confidence borne of a tremendous passion for history sifted with an amusing, astounding and passionate insight. Her appraisal of Robert Louis Stevenson alone was worth the trip.
Elaine
“As usual Hazel who took the tour, was entertaining and made it very interesting with lots of facts about the characters in the novella. Plus taking us around Covent Garden and Leicester Square pointing out properties featured in it as well. Look forward to the next one.”
Sarah and Tony
“Having been on a Hazel walk a few years ago which focussed more on the general history of the area and the contributions of eminent Victorians, this walk was a great opportunity to now learn about Robert Louis Stevenson and the ‘Gothic’ influences we otherwise just walk past. Once again a very informative and enjoyable walk with fascinating facts.”
Nicole
“Very enjoyable walk, so easy to hear Hazel with her microphone. Interesting and learnt lots of things I didn’t know. Well done!”
Stephanie
“This was a really good walk and a nice group of people. Hazel is an excellent guide. Very interesting and informative and I gained a good understanding of Robert Louis Stephenson. I really recommend this walk.”
Jenny
“Interesting walk with a Gothic theme. Hazel is always such an enthusiastic, knowledgeable guide and I found out a few new things about an area that I walk through frequently.”
Charmain
“Interesting tour of back alleys in Covent garden and Soho which conjure up the atmosphere of the time. Quite important to know about the book or have an interest in this period. Guide was easy to hear and follow and answered questions to provide more background. Good tour if new to the area but perhaps needs to be a more general knowledge tour of covent garden and Soho rather than Jekyll and Hyde.”
Ruth
“Angela must spend a great deal of time researching her walks before venturing out with her fellow walkers. This new walk is very enjoyable and interesting, as usual, and means one looks at areas of London in a different light.”
John
“Informative and interesting walk hosted with characteristic charm. Well worth attending. There was a slightly new twist as it was a walk with a new script. It worked well. It would be even better if the walk took place in twilight/early evening …. but you can’t have everything.”
Melanie
“Excellent. A very informative and interesting walk with Hazel. Full of interesting historical facts – delivered with passion and knowledge about the subject and the area in this part of London.”
Ian
“Excellent walk and thoroughly enjoyable. Hazel is a superb guide very knowledgeable and informative and genuinely interesting. So good to see parts of London I didn’t know and have often just walked past. I really like to learn more about the history of the area and in this case link it to a novel, that is Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. If this is the standard, and I am sure it is, I would wholeheartedly recommend Hazel’s walks. Will definitely be going again and hope others enjoy them too.”
