It is on this guided walk where we delve into what makes a Victorian Christmas and explore well-known traditions which may be older than you think.
The City of London is awash with narrow alleyways reminding us of its historic past and it is on this walk where we have the opportunity to explore their evocative nature.
The walk starts at St Paul’s cathedral, through old streets of London, exploring lives of the Victorians at Christmas, dipping into Charles Dickens and ‘A Christmas Carol’.
At the beginning of the 19th century Christmas was hardly celebrated. Many businesses did not even consider it a holiday. But by the end of the century it had become the biggest annual celebration and took on the form we recognise today.
- Start: St Paul’s Cathedral
- Finish: Somerset House

“Hazel is an excellent guide & never disappoints. Her deep knowledge of London’s social history is very carefully researched yet is communicated with humour & the involvement of her happy audience. The weather wasn’t kind but Hazel was giving us yummy humbugs to get us all in the Christmas mood. We were taken down alleys I didn’t know existed & kept entertained as we learned about Victorian Christmases past, & much more besides. Thanks Hazel & Happy Christmas!”
